KEY TOXINS FOUND IN CIGARETTE SMOKE AND THEIR KNOWN HEALTH EFFECTS –

http://www.town.tecumseh.on.ca/nosmoking/KeyToxins.pdf

Physiological Action. Tobacco is a very depressant nauseant, an emetic by systemic and irritant action, a sternutatory, diuretic, diaphoretic, cathartic, sedative, antispasmodic, and narcotic. It first stimulates and afterwards paralyzes the motor nerves of involuntary muscles, and the secreting nerves of the glands, also the spinal cord and the vagus; at first stimulating both the vagus-roots and its ends in the heart (slowing the pulse-rate), but afterwards paralyzing the latter (causing high pulse-rate). It produces increased salivary and intestinal secretions, diuresis, tremor, clonic spasms, and a tetanic stage previous to its paresis. It contracts the pupils, slows and depresses the heart, first lowers and then raises the arterial tension, and reduces the body temperature; causes profuse sweating, cold and clammy skin, collapse, and death usually by paralysis of respiration, sometimes by paralysis of the heart. It does not impair the muscular irritability, nor does it act on the cerebrum directly. The empyreumatic products of Tobacco are similar in action but less powerful. Fatal results have followed the inhalation of the vapor.

The continued use of Tobacco by smoking or chewing to excess produces granular inflammation of the fauces and pharynx, atrophy of the retina, dyspepsia, lowered sexual power, sudden faints, nervous depression, cardiac irritability and occasionally angina pectoris. Used by the young it hinders the development of the higher nervous centres, and impairs the nutrition of the body by interfering with the processes of digestion and assimilation.

Nicotine is almost as rapidly fatal as Prussic Acid, death having occurred from a toxic dose in three minutes, with no symptoms except a wild stare and a deep sigh -

SMOKING/BACK PROBLEMS
Smoking increases one's risk of suffering from back disorders, according to a study from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Valley Medical Center in Fresno, California. Tobacco use seems to weaken the bones and slow production of new bone cells. Smoking also hinders the blood supply to the bones or interferes with the function of osteoblasts. SMOKING/THYROID
Heavy smokers have been shown to have substantial decreases in two thyroid hormones, T-3 (triiodothyronine) and T-4 (serum thyroxine). Several constituents of cigarette smoke are known to have antithyroid activity. Thyroid hormone level changes may have a profound effect on overall metabolism, as well as androgenic and estrogenic steroid activity. Light and moderate smokers demonstrated a milder decrease in thyroid hormone levels. (Archives of Internal Medicine 144:501-503, March, 1984)

LEUKEMIA/SMOKING
Leukemia rates in smokers are higher than in non-smokers. As the number of cigarettes smoked daily increases, so does the leukemia incidence. The authors of this study feel that smoking may be responsible for most cases of leukemia in adults. Passive smokers (those who are exposed to other people's cigarette smoke) are also at increased leukemia risk. (British Medical Journal 297:657-659, 1988)

LIFESTYLE/IMMUNE SYSTEM
A healthy lifestyle enhances the production of lymphokine- activated killer (LAK) cells, a group of lymphocytes which appear to assist the body in fighting cancer. Smoking produced a marked decrease in the production of LAK cells, while exercise increased them. In general, the more good health practices the person had the higher their LAK cell levels. (Preventive Medicine 25:717-724, 1996)

BREAST CANCER/CIGARETTE SMOKING
Smoking may increase the risk of breast cancer, particularly in women who have not yet entered menopause. (Archives of Internal Medicine 148:140-144, January, 1988)

TOBACCO/OBESITY/BREAST CANCER SPREAD
Women who use tobacco or are overweight are more likely to have early spread of breast cancer according to a University of California at Davis study. Habitual smokers were more likely to have lymph node involvement at the time of diagnosis of the disease. (Cancer 62:429-435, 1988)

SMOKING/COLON TUMORS
Cigarette smoking appears to increase the risk of colonic adenomas. (Gastroenterology 90(5 pt 2)1492, May 1986) These growths are considered to be precancerous.

SMOKING/CANCER OF THE CERVIX
Cigarette smoking is significantly associated with cancer of the cervix. The risk of cervical cancer increases as the number of cigarettes smoked daily increases. The risk may be greatest in those who began smoking early in their teens. (Journal of the American Medical Association 250(4)499-502, 1983)

SMOKING/CERVICAL CANCER
Dr. E. R. Greenberg of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center reports that heavy smokers have at least a two-fold increase in the risk of cervical cancer. (British Journal of Cancer 51:139-41, 1985)

COFFEE/SMOKING/PANCREATIC CANCER
Individuals who smoke and drink coffee are at increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer according to a California study. Previous studies have shown a relationship between coffee intake and pancreatic cancer, but apparently smoking elevates the risk even more. (Western Journal of Medicine 148:48-53, January 1988)

CANCER OF RENAL PELVIS/SMOKING
Smoking is the major cause of cancer of the renal pelvis. This type of cancer accounts for approximately 10% of kidney cancers in the United States. Those who stop smoking reduce their risk. Persons who use pain medications containing acetaminophen or phenacetin on a regular basis for periods of three or more years have an almost fourfold increase in risk. Estrogen medications (for birth control or menopausal symptoms) and excessive tea use (perhaps three or more cups per day) also increase the risk. (Journal of the National Cancer Institute 71(2)287-291, August 1983)

PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE/SMOKING
Pelvic inflammatory disease is more common in smokers than non- smokers, and more frequent in women who have had children. Low- income women are also at increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease. (Clinical and Investigative Medicine 13(3 Suppl)B35, August 1990)

SMOKING/PHENACETIN/CANCER OF THE URETER/CANCER OF THE RENAL PELVIS
Smoking increases the risk of cancer of the ureter, and pain medications containing phenacetin increase the risk of cancer of the renal pelvis, according to a study published in the Journal of Urology. (Journal of Urology 130(1)28-30, 1983)

Smoking Causes Genetic Damage Linked to Colon Cancer - http://www.cancer.org/docroot/NWS/content/NWS_1_1x_Smoking_Causes_Genetic_Damage_Linked_to_Colon_Cancer.asp

CIGARETTE SMOKING/BLADDER CANCER
A positive, consistent correlation between cigarette smoking and cancer of the lower urinary tract has been demonstrated. Comparison of a group of 470 smokers and 500 similar non-smoking controls demonstrated a higher cancer rate in the smokers. There was also a correlation of increased cancer in heavy smokers and those who inhaled cigarette smoke. (New England Journal of Medicine 284(3)129-134, January 21, 1971)

SMOKING/COFFEE/BLADDER CANCER
A strong association between smoking and bladder cancer risk was demonstrated in a West German study. Those who began smoking before 15 years of age are at greatest risk. Coffee drinking on a regular basis also increases the risk (one cup a day increases the risk by three times -- yes, decaffeinated also). (American Journal of Epidemiology 122(3)524, September 1985)

SMOKING/OVARIAN CYSTS
Cigarette smoking increases the rate of ovarian cysts in women, and apparently induces these changes at an age earlier than might be expected. (International Journal of Fertility 33(6)398-404, 1988)

SMOKING/SUBARACHNOID HEMORRHAGE
While not the only factor in subarachnoid hemorrhage, smoking has been demonstrated to increase the risk factor by 3:9 for men and 3:7 for women. (British Medical Journal 1:577-578, March 3, 1979)

SMOKING/THINKING
Smokers are less able to perform complex mental tasks than non- smokers. Smoking seems to damage the memory and limit one's ability to remember previous experiences. This may mean that smokers are less able to handle emergencies such as a car skidding on a wet road or after a tire blowout. (Science News 143:46-47, January 16, 1993)

SMOKING/BRAIN BLOOD FLOW
Cessation of smoking has been shown to increase blood flow to brain. Over 250 volunteers participated in a study in Houston, which revealed that even those who had smoked for 30 to 40 years demonstrated brain blood flow increases which were considered significant. Subjects in the study who had smoked in the past had less brain blood flow than subjects who had never smoked, but more than current smokers. (Geriatrics 40(8)21, August, 1985)

SMOKING MAY BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR MEMORY . CATARACTS LINKED TO SMOKING

People who smoke have a higher incidence of cataracts than those who do not; quitting smoking reduces this risk by limiting total dose-related damage to the lens.

JAMA. 284(6):713-716. 2000.

SMOKING/STROKE
A New Zealand study reveals that smoking may cause more strokes than high blood pressure, which is commonly known to predispose to stroke. Smokers have a threefold increase in risk when compared to non-smokers with normal blood pressure levels. As the number of cigarettes smoked increases so does the risk of stroke. (British Medical Journal 293:831-837, June, 1986)

SMOKING/URINARY INCONTINENCE
Women smokers are at greater risk of developing stress urinary incontinence or motor urinary incontinence than are non-smokers. (American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology 167:1213-1218, 1992)

TOBACCO USE/PROSTATE CANCER

RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME/SMOKING
Restless leg syndrome is poorly understood and has been attributed to a number of factors. A Canadian physician reports that a 70-year-old lady was cured of her symptoms about a month after she stopped smoking. (Canadian Medical Association Journal 133:426-427, September 1, 1985)

INTERMITTENT CLAUDICATION RISK FACTORS
A new report from the ongoing Framingham study reveals that intermittent claudication (pain in the legs, often brought on by walking) rises with age until about 75 years of age. Cigarette smoking approximately doubles the risk of intermittent claudication. It was found that impaired glucose tolerance increased the risk, and that hypertension (high blood pressure) increased the risk 2.5 to 4-fold. A low vital capacity (inability to take large amounts of air into the lungs)was also a risk. (Journal of the American Geriatric Society 33:13-18, 1985) Exercise will improve glucose tolerance, reduce high blood pressure, and increase vital capacity, thus decreasing the risk of intermittent claudication.

PASSIVE SMOKING/HEART DISEASE
More people die of smoking related heart disease than lung cancer. A ten-year study done in California revealed that wives of current or former smokers had a higher death rate from heart disease than did women whose husbands did not smoke. (American Journal of Epidemiology 121:645-50, 1985) Tobacco continues to be the number one health hazard in the United States, causing or making worse a host of diseases.

PASSIVE SMOKING/MENOPAUSE
Previous studies have revealed that smokers have earlier menopause than do non-smokers. Now a study shows that women who are exposed to the cigarette smoke of others may also undergo early menopause. (British Medical Journal 293:792, September 27, 1986)

CIGARETTE SMOKE/NON-SMOKERS
A decrease in the small airways airflow of nonsmokers subjected to cigarette smoke at work has been shown in studies at the University of California, San Diego, La Jolla. The study demonstrated that forced mid-expiratory flow among passive smokers (those exposed to others' smoke, but who do not themselves smoke) was comparable to flows measured in persons who smoked 1-10 cigarettes daily.
Reduced lung function has also been demonstrated in children whose parents smoke. Children in the 5-9 year old group who had two smoking parents had lower forced midexpiratory flow rates than children with only one smoking parent, and children with nonsmoking parents had the highest scores. (Family Practice News, September 15, 1980, p. 3, 40)

CERVICAL CANCER/SMOKING/PASSIVE SMOKING
Smokers are at increased risk of developing cervical cancer. Cervical cancer risk is also increased by passive smoke (inhaling the smoke of other smokers). (Journal of the American Medical Association 261(11)1593, March 17, 1989)

PASSIVE SMOKING/LUNG CANCER
A Japanese study reveals that non-smoking women whose husbands smoke are at a 50 percent increased risk of developing lung cancer. (Cancer Research 46:4804-4807, September 1986)

Second-hand smoke and lung cancer

A recent study demonstrated that non-smokers exposed to side-stream cigarette smoke take up and metabolize the carcinogens capable of causing lung cancer.

SMOKING HUSBANDS/CANCER IN WIVES
Non-smoking women exposed to their husband's cigarette smoke have a much higher incidence of lung cancer than non-smoking women married to non-smoking men. The risk of non-smoking wives was one- half to one-third that of women who smoke. The risk of lung cancer in women whose husbands smoked two or more packs a day was 2.08 times higher than those with non-smoking husbands, while those whose husband smoked 1-9 cigarettes daily had a risk 1.6 times greater than non-smokers. A study of 346 women who died of lung cancer over a 14 year period revealed an annual lung cancer death rate of 8.7 per 100,000 when the husband smoked only occasionally or not at all, 14 per 100,000 when they were ex-smokers or used less than 20 cigarettes daily, and 18.1 per 100,000 when the husbands smoked 20 or more cigarettes daily. (Medical World News, February 16, 1981, page 17, 19; Science News 119(4)53, January 24, 1981; Physician's Washington Report 3(8)5, February 1981)

PASSIVE SMOKING/BREAST CANCER
Dr. Wesley Horton, of the Oregon Health Sciences University, states that indoor cigarette smoke pollution is a major cause of breast cancer. Previous studies have shown no relationship between smoking and breast cancer, but these studies did not take "passive" or "sidestream" smoke into consideration. International mortality studies demonstrate a positive relationship between lung cancer in men and breast cancer in women, suggesting that a husband's smoking habit may induce breast cancer in his wife. Exposure longer than 20 years may be required for the woman to manifest the disease process. (Cancer 62:6-14, 1988)

PASSIVE SMOKING/LUNG FUNCTION
Non-smokers who are exposed to cigarette smoke suffer reduced lung function. (Thorax 45:27-31, 1990)

VITAMIN C LOSS WITH SECOND-HAND SMOKE

A study comparing people exposed to more than 20 hours per week of second-hand smoke compared to those not exposed showed that those exposed, even though having a similar diet to the non-exposed group, suffered low blood levels of vitamin C — and in some cases alarmingly low levels. Vitamin C is an antioxidant capable of neutralizing free radicals that lie at the root of a variety of diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Thus low blood levels of vitamin C will increase the susceptibility to these diseases.11

Reference: Journal of Investigative Dermatology, January ,1994

PASSIVE SMOKING/INFANT COLIC
Only 32 percent of infants with non-smoking parents suffered colic after meals, while 91 percent of infants in homes where the father smoked 20 or more cigarettes per day suffered colic. As the parent's smoking habits increased, so did the rate of colic in infants. (British Medical Journal 289:660, September 1984)

PASSIVE SMOKING/CHRONIC MIDDLE EAR EFFUSION
Children of parents who smoke are more likely to suffer from chronic middle ear effusion than are children not exposed to cigarette smoke. Children who suffer from repeated or persistent middle ear problems often undergo surgery in an attempt to correct the problem.
Increased rates of bronchitis, bronchiolitis and pneumonia are also seen in children who are exposed to passive smoking. These children suffer changes in their pulmonary function which may predispose to later respiratory problems. (Infectious Diseases in Children 1(1)5, January 1988)

Passive smoking (exposure to cigarette smoke) apparently increases the risk of SIDS. A Seattle study revealed that 61% of SIDS mothers smoked both during pregnancy and after delivery, compared to 42% of non-SIDS mothers. SIDS mothers also smoked a significantly greater number of cigarettes. A 1967 study revealed that 68.2% of SIDS mothers smoked, while only 39.5% of mothers with live control infants smoked. Cigarette Smoking During Pregnancy –

http://www.chem-tox.com/pregnancy/smoking.htm

SMOKING/BREASTFEEDING
Mothers who smoke while breastfeeding risk exposing their infants to insecticides which are applied to the tobacco plants. (Mayo Clinic Proceedings 59:759-765, November 1984) ED- Infants whose mothers smoked during pregnancy are at twice the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) than those of non-smoking mothers.

SMOKING AND CHILDREN'S IQ

Cigarette smoke contains an estimated 2,000-4,000 different chemicals, some of which certainly have the potential to damage developing fetal cells. A researcher in Canada has shown that women who smoked during pregnancy could cause hearing problems in their children. Another report has shown that IQ scores in 3 to 4 year olds from mothers who smoked 10 or more cigarettes daily, were on average 9 points lower than for children from nonsmoking mothers.

In microcosm, a mother with an unborn child is like the Earth and us. What the mother does to her body affects the environment within which the child develops. The more this environment is destroyed, imbalanced and toxified, the less likely the child is to be healthy or develop full potential. Similarly, the more the Earth is imbalanced and toxified, the less we can expect health and the development of our full potential.

Fouling a mother’s body or fouling the Earth makes about as much sense as sawing through the limb you are sitting on.

LOW NICOTINE CIGARETTES
Smokers have been urged to switch to low-nicotine cigarettes to reduce their risk of lung cancer. A recent study reveals that the tar and nicotine levels reported by the Federal Trade Commission are misleading. The machines used to test the cigarettes do not smoke the way humans do. Furthermore, smokers, perhaps unconsciously, alter their smoking habits to maintain their nicotine level intake levels. They often smoke more cigarettes, and inhale more deeply. The study of 15 brands of cigarettes revealed that "low-nicotine" cigarettes do not contain less nicotine. The nicotine levels in the tobacco actually correlated inversely with the nicotine concentrations reported by the FTC method! Blood nicotine levels correlated with the number of cigarettes smoked daily, but not with the machine-measured nicotine levels. The authors conclude that smoking "low-nicotine" cigarettes does not decrease nicotine consumption. (New England Journal of Medicine 309:139-142, 1983)

NICOTINE GUM/HEART DISEASE
While nicotine gum may help a person stop smoking, its long-term use may increase one's risk of heart disease. Nicotine gum may produce hyperinsulinemia (abnormally high levels of insulin production) and insulin resistance. (Circulation 94:878-881, 1996)

COFFEE/CIGARETTE SMOKING
If you are trying to stop smoking you should also eliminate the use of coffee according to a study from the Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center. A number of previous studies have shown a strong correlation between the two habits. (Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior 34:565-570, 1989)

FEWER CIGARETTES/TOXIN EXPOSURE
Many smokers, unable to stop smoking, attempt to reduce the number of cigarettes smoked. A recent study reveals that people who attempt this often unknowingly take in more smoke from each cigarette, which raises toxin exposure. (New England Journal of Medicine 315(21)1310-1313, November 20, 1986

Sitat hentet fra blogg:
" Myth: 9/. Just like mongrel dogs, mixed race people are healthier and less susceptible to inbred diseases
And there are people out there who propagate this garbage. As with all these modern memes, it couldn’t be further from the Truth and as always just more inverted Truth. The healthiest of races are the purest of races. This is a given. Mixed race children apparently are not able to receive organ donations. Why all of a sudden would genetics suddenly change in cultures? If races have bred amongst their own for thousands of years; why now is this seemed unhealthy? A jewish propagandised narrative perhaps – just more jewish mind control to guilt Europeans into accepting their white genocide."

I cannot believe how sharp my hearing and eyesight have become and my wife no longer needs her glasses to read! Apparently her hearing has not improved as she still doesn't listen to anything I say...

There are so many benefits and reasons to have this treatment it can seem unreal when someone speaks about it. Any skepticism I held before hand has been put to rest.

Personally I have experienced the following;

Neck Pain - gone

Back pain, around the spine - 60% better

Back pain, muscular, old injuries etc - 60% better

Increased range of movement in my neck

Joint pain - gone! Feels like all my joints have been oiled!

Morning headaches, completely gone

Improved vision

Pain behind right eye - gone

Waking up much earlier and feeling much more refreshed.

Feeling happier! I feel fantastic physicaly and emotionaly!

Less stress and much better stress management, this feels fantastic

improved digestion and much better bowel movements

Better breathing, through better posture my organs have more space!

There are other things but these are certainley the major benefits I have experienced so far. I am also aware of old injuries as a dull ache while they're healing, this is nothing compared to how uncomfortable I can be simply sitting down or trying to get to sleep. I have slept like a baby since I have had this treatment!

I am an athlete and I will be returning to training tomorrow after a short break due to illness (that has cleared up since having the treatment) and I cannot wait to see and feel the changes in my workouts
Oppdatering ovenstående post -

Neck Pain - gone still gone!

Back pain, around the spine - 60% better 80% better

Back pain, muscular, old injuries etc - 60% better all but the most stubborn (and recent) injuries seem to have completely healed, any remaining pains are nearly gone too (this includes torn muscles and a dislocated shoulder)

Increased range of movement in my neck when i talk to people about the atlasprofilax treatment i just show them how far i can turn my head without moving my body. i have a strong neck through my martiala rts training but it remains soft to the touch, not tight like yours maybe now

I went there yesterday. The realignment was really easy and smooth.

What I noticed right away was that more energy was circulating in the body. I could feel it starting at the feet and then rising. This was when I was still sitting. When I got up and walked a few paces I could feel that my whole posture had changed. I don't know how to describe it adequately but it was as if my body had been searching for this posture all its life and now it was there! It felt really really good.
I got very tired afterwards an light in my head so I went to sleep for a while. The rest of the day was just fine.

This morning I woke up feeling really happy and joyful. Happy to be alive and greet another day. (I haven't felt like that for a long time....)

My posture has been bad all my life, it will take some time for the rest of the body to re-align to this new atlas-postion but I have very good feeling about this. I'll keep you posted on further effects...

I am really happy I did this

Had my Atlas corrected just before the New Year! Noticed a difference
as soon as I got into my car ... I naturally wanted to keep my head up,
instead of slouching, whilst sitting.

Had it done !I warned Marie beforehand that i had a tough neck also i had a nasty neck strain from a couple of days earlier. After i had it done i could not speak properly for a while and then i was overcome with a big grin/smile that i could not get rid of till i got outside cause it was a cold and raining and i had a 4 mile bike ride.First thing i noticed almosted straight away was my feet felt firmly planted on the ground and a l had a light headed feeling, riding home i noticed my left leg was stronger than normal(i was used right leg for speed increase while on bike)i could also see way better looking behind at traffic. As other people have said my posture has improved and have felt my shoulders readjust themselves(no more slouching). My neck is still sore from where the probe was used but i expected this add to that i feel like i have more get up an go,im giving myself a rest before before i get back to bench press etc.In all im happy i had it done and look forward to future improvements also my neck strain has improved.

I had my Atlas correction earlier today and I can't believe how I feel!!!

I'm so happy that I've done this! Thanks to exclamatio for all your good information on this thread and a friend who did a dowsing for me and gave me the last 'push' I needed to go for it.

Immediately after the correction I felt different; lighter, my posture improved that second, I felt as if I was going to fall backwards not being used to walking like this and most of all, my longs felt so big and filled with 'fresh mountain air' (strange for Amsterdam, hehe) and my lunch tasted much better! I could actually chew much better as well!! (since I had a problem with my jaw)

And I could feel the energy flowing through me much stronger than before! (I'm an energy healer)

I'm looking forward to all the improvements, especially the spiritual one. My practitioner Felix told me that all animals have a dislocated Atlas as well
and we had a great talk about how a corrected Atlas is the step to open you up spiritually.

Much love
Mila

I just had my atlas realigned 6 days ago. I also notice better balance and I just got my hair cut today and my stylist noticed I was sitting taller. My upper neck still feels tight. I had a massage a few days after. The tightness does seem to get a little better each day. I will have a recheck in August.

Thank you very much. I actualy just got my atlas ajusted today. I feel a great deal better. Im shocked that my leg length got fixed by something up in my neck. When they did it I could literally feel my head and upper body get pulled back into its upright position. And my neck and back muscles that were sooooo tight just felt like they were released

:) Tusen takk for hjelpen. :)”

VIL LEGENE TRO MEG?? Nei.

Lite ubehag i forhold.

Sov over åtte timer i går natt; litt dårligere nå i natt.

23. dagen i dag.

2 dag:

Dag 6:

i bakken.

Dag 7:

Dag 14:

Og still going strong.

Moro!

- mer bevegelighet i nakken.
- ikke så stram overst i ryggen.
- ME'n er en liten tanke bedre
- Hodet fungerer MYE bedre

POSTMENOPAUSAL ESTROGEN USE/LUPUS
Women who use estrogen are at increased risk of developing systemic lupus erythematosus. The risk increases as length of time the estrogen is used increases. The risk drops as estrogen use is discontinued. (Medical Tribune 35(22)8, November 17, 1994)

ESTROGEN REPLACEMENT THERAPY/SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS
Women who are taking postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy are at increased risk of developing systemic lupus erythematosus. The risk increases as the length of time the hormones are taken increases. (Arthritis and Rheumatism 37(Suppl 9)S211, September 1994)

ESTROGEN REPLACEMENT THERAPY/OVARIAN CANCER
Women who use long-term estrogen replacement therapy are at increased risk of developing fatal ovarian cancer according to a study from Emory University and the American Cancer Society. (American Journal of Epidemiology 141(9)828-35, 1995)

BREAST CANCER FROM HORMONE USE

More than 5 years of use of estrogen with progestin increases the risk of breast cancer by 9% per year. Reference: Am J Epidemiol. 147(suppl):645. 1998

ESTROGENS/FIBROCYSTIC BREAST DISEASE
Two different studies have revealed that estrogen use increases rates of fibrocystic breast disease. A Massachusetts study reveals increased rates of hospitalization for fibrocystic breast disease during the first year of estrogen use, then during the fourth, fifth and following years. As years of use increase so does risk. None of the previously known risk factors for fibrocystic breast disease (late age at menopause, no or few pregnancies, age, race, and socioeconomic status) appear to influence fibrocystic breast disease rates as markedly as does estrogen use. (American Journal of Epidemiology 121:238-245, 1985; American Journal of Epidemiology 124(5)746-751, 1986

ESTROGEN/GALLBLADDER DISEASE
Women who take estrogen are at increased risk of developing gallbladder disease requiring gallbladder removal. A new study demonstrates that the elevated risk remains even after the use of estrogen is discontinued. (Gastroenterology 94:91-95, 1988)

Östrogen bakom 3 400 cancerfall
http://www.svd.se/dynamiskt/inrikes/did_9585630.asp

År 1997 påbörjades två randomiserade studier i Sverige, HABITS-studien (Hormonal Replacement Therapy—Is It Safe?) och Stockholmstudien.

Estrogen, Heart Disease And Cancer

For years estrogen and estrogen synthetic progesterone hormones have been prescribed to postmenopausal women for the relief of menopausal symptoms. An added benefit was that it was believed that this estrogen replacement therapy helped protect women against cardiovascular disease.

New research has shown that there is in fact no change in cardiovascular risk for women who are taking estrogen replacement hormones compared to those who do not.

On the other hand, the risk of breast cancer has been demonstrated to be significantly increased after only one year of estrogen use. Researchers evaluated some 51 different epidemiological studies of some 160,000 women to prove the correlation between estrogen and breast cancer.

A better alternative for women is natural progesterone therapy which has none of the side effects of the estrogens. (See previous issues of the Health Letter for recommendations on the use of natural progesterones.)

Progesterones are also the treatment of choice for endometriosis. This can be a difficult disease to treat and the use of pharmaceuticals such as Lupron can make women extremely sick. Additionally, some practitioners recommend that their patients get pregnant in order to cure the condition, since pregnancy results in a dramatic increase in progesterone levels. For those who don’t really want to have a baby as a method of treating a disease, natural progesterone therapy would certainly be a good alternative.

HORMONE HERESY –

http://www.nexusmagazine.com/articles/hormone1.html

http://www.nexusmagazine.com/articles/hormone2.html

Estrogens: Premarin lowers folic-acid and B6 levels, which can raise blood homocysteine levels (elevated homocysteine is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Research has not found which nutrients are depleted by estrogens but one would assume it would be similar to those of birth control pills - lower levels of vitamins B1, B2, B4, B6 and C and the minerals zinc and manganese. These contraceptives also decrease blood levels of amino acids and increase levels of cholesterol and triglycerides - both risk factors for heart disease. Estrogens also raise glucose levels, which may predispose a woman to insulin resistance and diabetes, which further increase the risk of heart disease. Estrogens boost sodium levels and increase fluid retention.

OOPS, WE WERE WRONG

For years the pharmaceutical industry has promoted hormone replacement therapy (HRT), involving the use of estrogen extracted from pregnant mares' urine, as a panacea for women experiencing difficulties in menopause, and as a protection against heart disease, bone loss and even Alzheimer's. The enormously successful campaign to get every menopausal woman on drugs began in 1966 when Wyeth-Ayerst, developer of the drug, paid Robert Wilson, an enthusiastic doctor, to write a bestselling book called Feminine Forever and then financed him to fly around the country promoting it. Wilson told women and doctors alike that estrogen therapy "could keep women young, healthy and attractive." He painted a dire picture of the consequences to women who resisted. "At age 50, there are no ova, no follicles, no thesa, no estrogen—truly a galloping catastrophe." Wilson promised that estrogen therapy could save women from the ravages of age. "Breasts and genital organs will not shrivel. Such women will be much more pleasant to live with and will not become dull and unattractive." This offensive propaganda spurred billions of dollars in sales of HRT drugs yearly. Now a rigorous study has found that HRT causes increases in breast cancer, heart attacks, strokes and blood clots. The study did not even show that HRT could reduce the risk of bone fractures. Other trials have demolished the theory that HRT protects against Alzheimer's. Sixteen thousand participants in the study, the Women's Health Initiative sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, received notices to discontinue HRT and Wyeth stock fell 24 percent after the report (New York Times 8/10/2002). The lesson: be skeptical of claims for patented medicines. But it's a lesson that Americans are taking a long time to learn.

ESTROGEN REPLACEMENT
Jacques Rossouw, M.D., from the National Institutes of Health Women's Health Initiative told the National Cancer Institute's advisory board that physicians are "rushing to judgement" regarding the use of estrogen. He points out that as baby boomers age more, more of them are being given estrogen replacement replacements, but it has not yet been proven that they actually are effective in preventing osteoporosis or heart disease. The FDA has approved the use of estrogen only for the treatment of menopausal symptoms and diagnosed osteoporosis; not for the prevention of these diseases.
Estrogen supplements increase the risk of breast cancer. (Journal of the National Cancer Institute 88(10)637-638, May 15, 1996)

ESTROGEN REPLACEMENT THERAPY/FATAL OVARIAN CANCER
The long-term use of estrogen replacement therapy may increase the risk of developing fatal ovarian cancer according to a recent study from the American Cancer Society and the Emory University School of Public Health. Risk increases as duration of use increases.
Previous studies on the relationship between estrogen use and ovarian cancer did not study duration of use.
The authors of this study point out that the women in this study group were given higher doses of estrogen than are given today.
Another interesting finding in this study was that menarche after 12 years of age is associated with a reduced risk of later ovarian cancer. (American Journal of Epidemiology 141(9)828-35, 1995)

Three New Studies About HRT -
A recent study published in The Lancet found that out of one million British women, 22% taking hormone replacement therapy had a higher risk of dying from breast cancer than those who had never taken the drugs. The risk wore off within a few years of stopping the treatments.

BIRTH CONTROL PILLS/BIRTH DEFECTS
Use of oral contraceptives has been associated with an increased risk of leg or arm defects in infants. Infants with abnormalities were more likely to have been conceived while the mother was taking birth control pills. (American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology 155:1072-8, 1986)

DRUGS FOR THE "MORNING AFTER" CONTRACEPTIVE

Diethystilbestrol (see above – “DRUGS TO PREVENT MISCARRIAGE”) prescribed to prevent miscarriage (which it causes), was also doled out to whole populations as a morning-after pill though the dangers were known. Causes still-birth, infertility, congenital defects, malformations, breast cancer, asthma, arthritis, diabetes. Worldwide thousands of legal claims made against Eli Lilly and other pharmaceutical companies. A Dutch DES Report estimates that in the European community alone up to 9 million people could have been exposed to DES in the womb. That ninety percent of women prescribed DES now have problems in their reproductive organs. –

IT WAS APPROVED

About 25 years ago it became apparent that the drug diethylstilbestrol (DES) was causing vaginal cancer in daughters born of women who were treated with the hormone during pregnancy. Over 6 million pregnant American women were given this drug to prevent miscarriages even though it was later found to be ineffective for this purpose.

Adding to this horror story it is now found that the children of DES mothers can be infertile, can actually have an increased incidence of miscarriage, and boys can have cystic testicles, testicular cancer and a tiny penis. Added to this, the hormone is believed to cause damage to the immune system increasing the susceptibility to autoimmune disorders such as thyroiditis, pernicious anemia, myasthenia gravis, Crohn’s disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis and breast and prostate cancer. Even the granddaughters of DES treated mothers are at increased risk of disease. DES children would now be in the 20-to 30-year old range. These should investigate whether their mothers took the drug if they have any of the above symptoms.

But this is only one of many FDA/doctor approved pharmaceutical disasters. A drug, practically by definition, is dangerous.

CROHN'S DISEASE/ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES
Crohn's disease limited to the colon has been shown to be more frequent in women who had taken oral contraceptives in the year prior to the development of symptoms according to a British study. Previous reports have suggested a relationship between oral contraceptives and colitis, and this study supports those reports. Women who developed colitis improved after discontinuation of the medication. (British Medical Journal 288:595-596, February 25, 1984) No hormone is without some hazard.

BIRTH CONTROL PILLS/CROHN'S DISEASE
Several recent studies have suggested a high risk of inflammatory disease in women who use oral contraceptives. One study revealed a twofold greater incidence of Crohn's disease in oral contraceptive users than in nonusers; another study revealed a 40 percent larger incidence in oral contractive users. Risk decreases after oral contraceptives are stopped, disappearing after about four years. The longer the oral contraceptives are used, the greater the risk. (Gastroenterology 89:1046-1049, 1985)

ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES

Found to increase the risk of blood-clots leading to heart attacks, lung disorders and strokes. By 1980 over 400 deaths reported.

"Not only had the animal tests failed to identify the hazard, but in rats and dogs oral contraceptives produced entirely the opposite effect, making it more difficult for the blood to clot."

The use of oral contraceptives (OCs) almost doubles the risk of myocardial infarction in women. Those who smoke and have high blood pressure exhibit a dramatic increase in risk with the use of OCs. The total study population demonstrated a 1.8 risk rate, while non-smokers without other risk factors had a 2.8 fold increase in risk. Smokers who used OCs showed a 5.6-fold greater risk than those with no risk factors. (Family Practice News 10(20)24, October 15, 1980)

CERVICAL ADENOCARCINOMA RISK FACTORS
The incidence of cervical adenocarcinoma in women under 35 years-of-age has more than doubled since the 1970s. Los Angeles researchers studied nearly 600 women in an attempt to understand the factors which contribute to this disease. They report that the number of sexual partners before the age of 20, weight gain, and long-term use of oral contraceptives increase the risk. Women of low educational attainment and lower economic status also appear to be at increased risk. (Cancer Causes and Control 7:391-401, 1996)

BIRTH CONTROL/FIBROCYSTIC DISEASE OF THE BREAST
Women who have previously used oral contraceptives are more likely to develop fibrocystic disease of the breast after menopause. (American Journal of Epidemiology 120:87-96, 1984)

ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES/FIBROCYSTIC BREAST DISEASE
Some studies have suggested that birth control pills may reduce the risk of fibrocystic breast disease. It now appears that this holds true only for a specific type of fibrocystic disease-- the type least likely to progress to breast cancer. A new study now reveals that women who have never used birth control pills are at a lower risk of fibrocystic disease as a whole. (Journal of the National Cancer Institute 71:5-9, 1983)

ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES/BREAST CANCER
Birth control pills may stimulate breast cancer, particularly in older users, according to a California study. It is felt that latent cancer cells present in the breast may be stimulated into active growth. (Cancer 59:281-287, 1987)

BIRTH CONTROL PILLS/CERVICAL CANCER
There has been a marked increase in the incidence of cancer of the cervix in the under-35 age group. There is some suggestion that this increase may be due to changes in the cervix which are associated with the use of birth control pills. (British Medical Journal 295:1446-1447, December 5, 1987

ESTROGEN REPLACEMENT THERAPY/OVARIAN CANCER
Women who use long-term estrogen replacement therapy are at increased risk of developing fatal ovarian cancer according to a study from Emory University and the American Cancer Society. (American Journal of Epidemiology 141(9)828-35, 1995)
